Chumash ('alapkaswa'): xapšɨx 

Young stems were eaten. Hunters placed leaves in their mouths to camouflage their smell. Used to line acorn granaries. Leaves were placed on the head to treat headache. Pounded leaves were added to water and drunk to induce vomiting. In more modern times the plant is used in purifying rituals.

'alapkaswa' refers to the local Chumash dialect spoken at the kaswa’ village near modern Hope Ranch.
