Chumash ('alapkaswa'): šixwapš ’i’ašk’a’ 

A decoction of the boiled root (sometimes with added sugar) was consumed to remedy fever. Water strained through the crushed leaves was used to wash hair to freshen the scalp.

'alapkaswa' refers to the local Chumash dialect spoken at the kaswa’ village near modern Hope Ranch.
