Chumash ('alapkaswa'): ʼalašxalalaš 

Roots were boiled by the Chumash to make a tea used to treat coughs and other pulmonary ailments. Also applied externally on sores. The Cahuilla people took a decoction of this plant for constipation.

'alapkaswa' refers to the local Chumash dialect spoken at the kaswa’ village near modern Hope Ranch.
