Chumash ('alapkaswa'): ya’i
The Chumash of the Santa Barbara area used the plant to thatch sweathouses. The Ventura Chumash used this plant to make brooms. They also used smoke from the burning plant to blacken rush (Juncus) leaves for basket making.
