Chumash ('alapkaswa'): Unknown 

Santa Ynez Reservation Chumash used the plant to treat poison oak by applying boiled leaves to the rash. The branches were also used to knock the spines off prickly pear cactus fruit.

'alapkaswa' refers to the local Chumash dialect spoken at the kaswa’ village near modern Hope Ranch.
