California buckwheat

Scientific: Eriogonum fasciculatum var. foliolosum

Common: California buckwheat

Español: Poléo

Chumash ('alapkaswa'): tswana’atl ’išup

This plant may have been confused with certain members of the mint family. The top of the plant was boiled, made into a tea, or used in bathing for rheumatism and problems with menstruation. A hot decoction of the plant (or just the flower) was drunk for stomach problems.

Note the name “tswana’atl ’išup” was used by the Ventura area Chumash for this plan.

'alapkaswa' refers to the local Chumash dialect spoken at the kaswa’ village near modern Hope Ranch.
