Tamarisk Eradication and Surveys
Join Channel Islands Restoration from March 7th-11th for a fun and exciting 5-day backcountry backpacking excursion into Sespe Wilderness in the Los Padres National Forest. We will head up the Pothole Trail from Lake Piru to remove tamarisk and provide area surveys of its presence. We will learn about local native flora and fauna, including the endangered California red-legged frog and arroyo toad. This trip will be pack and stock supported by the Los Padres Outfitters. The Outfitters will carry 35 pounds of camping gear for each volunteer and provide warm-cooked meals. This is an excellent opportunity to explore the Los Padres National Forest. We will use saws, loppers, and hand tools to remove the invasive tamarisk.
We will meet at the trailhead and take the Pothole trail, which switchbacks up the ridgeline and enters the Sespe Wilderness. The hike is approximately 6 miles from the trailhead to the primitive camping location.
What is tamarisk?
Tamarisk (Tamarix ramosissima) is an invasive shrub or small tree native to drier areas of Eurasia and Africa. Also known as salt cedar, tamarisk favors riparian habitats in the Southwestern United States and California. This invasive species severely alters habitat quality for wildlife, watershed hydrology and floodplain vegetation, and the frequency and intensity of wildfires.
Food
Food will be provided by the Los Padres Outfitters except for breakfast and lunch on the first day of hiking to the camping location.
RSVP
Reserving space is absolutely required, people who did not RSVP and show up will be turned away.
