That's right, we have another San Nicolas Island trip coming up! While the past few trips have focused on growing new native plants, this trip will focus on our older plants already in the ground.
We'll be headed out to San Nicolas Island to pull weeds from our habitat restoration sites before the weeds have the chance to take over and smother our growing native plants. When our native plants are established, they will be able to outcompete the invasive weeds, but they're still growing and they need our help!
Weeding around our native plants is tough but important work! Invasive weeds are adapted to grow quickly in response to rain, take up all the available resources, grow tall enough to absorb all the light they can, and then they go to seed and die off as soon as the resources run out. Meanwhile our native plants prefer to first put down strong roots that will be able to withstand future droughts, and then they slowly grow taller year after year. Our native plants are much better adapted in the long term, but the invasive weeds can smother them before they have a chance to grow.
Help us care for our native plants today so that they can soon thrive for years to come!
With previous events, we have offered volunteer spots for San Nicolas Island trips on a first-come first-served basis. Often these trips fill up within the first few hours of an opportunity being posted. That system wasn't fair to those who check their email less often and therefore we are going to try a new system.
Please fill out the form below to be entered into our lottery system. On Monday at 10 am we will close the entry form and randomly select volunteers. People that have volunteered with us on the mainland will receive an extra entry for every mainland event they have participated in within the past 356 days.
If you are unable to fill out the form below, please email the volunteer coordinator at volunteer@cirweb.org and provide your full name, email, and phone number to be entered.
The sign up form for this event is now closed. Thank you to everyone that signed up. Had we done first-come, first-served, the trip would have been full in under six minutes. Leaving it open for 72 hours, we received 104 signups for the lottery.
