Sweet fennel
Fennel was brought to the Channel Islands in the 1800s. Animals helped carry it along the road and it spread out to San Miguel Island, Santa Rosa Island, and Santa Cruz Island. Sweet fennel invades areas where the soil has been disrupted and can prevent native species from flourishing. Through it’s chemical makeup, it can outcompete native plants for water, light, and other natural resources.
