Blue gum and red gum
Originally from Australia, Eucalyptus was brought to the Channel Islands for lumber, fuel, and decorative reasons originally. They have begun to become a nuisance on Santa Cruz Island and continue to multiple if not treated properly. Eucalyptus trees are well-versed in competing with native plants for water and soil resources. They prevent seeds from becoming established and can add toxicity to the soil. They can also easily light on fire and increase the capacity for fires on the islands. Red gum is found on Santa Rosa Island and Santa Cruz Island while Blue gum is on Santa Rosa Island, Santa Cruz Island, and Anacapa Islands respectively.
